Kanu, who skippered the Nigerian side to win the Atlanta'96 soccer gold, said f om his base in England he was elated that the initial hiccup in the Nigerian squad has now yielded way to a more clement atmosphere in the camp..
“I spoke with some of the players before the semi-final match, especially after the initial crisis that followed the game against USA. I am happy that all is well and they are able to get to the semi finals.”
Kanu, who plays for the English FA Cup kings, Portsmouth, said he will take permission from his manager, Harry Redknapp if Nigeria wins against Belgium Tuesday
He hopes to attend the final which will be a repeat fixture of one of the last two games Nigeria played to win the gold in 1996.
That year, Nigeria made a dramatic comeback from 3-1 to win 4-3 at extra time in the semi finals against Brazil, with Kanu scoring the winning goal.
Nigeria beat Argentina in the final and both Brazil and Argentina will play in the other semi final here on Tuesday.
Brazil has never won the Olympic gold medal. In fact it is the only global honour that the South American country has never won.
Argentina is the defending champions in the men Olympics.
