25/08/2008

With its dream of eight gold medals from the Beijing Olympics largely unfulfilled, Nigeria has said the preparations for the next games in London in 2012 would begin in earnest.

``I want to tell you that this is no time to relax as the end of these (Beijing) Games marks the beginning of another. We must start working towards London 2012 Games,'' head of Nigeria's delegation to Beijing, Amos Adamu, said here while addressing the Nigerian contingent.

``We must look inwards at mistakes that cost us medals and plug all loopholes. We no doubt made progress over our last outings at the Sydney 2000 and the 2004 Athens Games. Our performance has shown that there is room for improvements. We can perform well but we need Government to improve the funding of sports,'' he said.

Nigeria ended up with one silver medal and three bronze medals at the Olympics, a far cry from its hopes for 8 gold medals.

Going into the last day of the games Sunday, Nigeria was 61st (out of 82 countries) on the medals table, compared with Kenya which placed 15th with 5 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals to emerge Africa's best nation at the Olympics.

Commentators have blamed Nigeria's poor showing at the games on lack of government support, which has made early preparations impossible.

One disgruntled athlete, top sprinter Uchenna Emedolu, even sabotaged the country's men's 4x100 metres team in protest against the non-payment of his training allowances.

Following is the list of all Nigerian medalists at the end of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Of the 25 medalists, 18 of them won silver medals from soccer event.

The rest are bronze medalists -- one each in Taekwondo and Long Jump-- and and five from Athletics (4x100metres women).
