“It is a fact we won the game, but I feel like we lost,” Siasia said at the post-match conference, pointing out “we were just lucky with one of our two goals and there are still areas where we have to improve. So we have to learn from our mistakes. Hopefully, we can get better with the next game.”
He said that his side was lucky to have a one-man advantage following the expulsion of the American left full back, Michael Orozco, adding “I will try and correct the tactical indiscipline in the team."
According to him, sometimes, he gives an instruction in pre-match briefings, but the players get to the field and do a different thing. “Sometimes, I feel like jumping into the field to effect correction, but I know it is not possible.”
More often, the Nigerian players tried to put up stylish game to show off, the coach noted, pointing out “I have to tell them, this is about business...scoring goals...and not show-biz.”
He was particularly not happy with goalkeeper Ambrose Vanzekin, who caused the penalty that earned the Americans a penalty kick and also the lone goal that Japan scored last Sunday.
“He keeps giving our opponents Christmas presents...even though on a good day, Vanzekin is a fantastic goalkeeper,” Siasia said.
Siasia said he would like to go back to the drawing board, watch the matches again on video and do a review with his players, adding “the way we are going now, we may not be able to match the feat of the 1996 squad. And I know that Nigerians expects nothing less than the gold medal.” |
