Banda said upon the corpse's arrival in Lusaka Sunday, it will be taken to Mulun gushi International Conference Centre where it will be laid in state.
“Between Monday, 25 August 2008, and Friday, 29 August 2008, the corpse will be taken to Provincial Capitals and on return to Lusaka, will lie in state at Mulun g ushi Conference Centre up to 2 September 2008 and thereafter will lie in state a t State House until the burial ceremony Wednesday, 3rd September 2008,” Banda stated.
He said close relatives of the first family would gather at the residence in State House, while members of the public will gather at the Lusaka Show Grounds during the period of mourning and those wishing to pay their last respects would do so at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre and in the provinces.
Meanwhile, the Zambian cabinet has extended the period of mourning for the deceased President from seven days to 21 days, a decision Banda said was made at a special cabinet meeting Thursday.
Justice Minister George Kunda disclosed Thursday that the presidential by-election would be held within 90 days from the day Mwanawasa died, as required by the constitution, adding that the exact date would be worked out.
He explained that vice-president Banda would act as President until a substantive President is elected.
Government said funeral expenses for President Mwanawasa as well as for the pres idential by-election to follow would be accommodated in the 2008 national budget.
Mwanawasa, 59, died Tuesday at Percy Military Hospital in Paris, France, where h e was admitted after he suffered a stroke 29 June. |
