According to immigration director, Mariam Jamalail, the investigations are to determine those involved in the disappearance of the documents from her department
She also explained that measures were being taken to fight against passport forgery, believed to involve people from outside the immigration services.
She added that although some of the forged passports detected were supposedly issued by provincial offices of the immigration services or by the country's consulates abroad, genuine passports were obtained and sold to forgers, who changed the details.
"With some expertise, they change the original photo and the names of the owners ", said Jamalail. "Unfortunately, we have found the users, but not the forgers.
"The recent theft of passports is part of the same criminal network. As a precautionary measure, we have notified the border authorities of the serial numbers of the stolen documents in order to prevent them from being used."
She said that two immigration officials had been arrested in a part of the Niass a province, for issuing documents by forging the signature of the provincial director.
Commenting on the situation of illegal foreign residents, Jamalail said that the deportation of these people was costing the Mozambican government a lot of money.
In 2006 and 2007, the government spent 2.2 million meticais (about US$ 96,500) on deportations.
The amount shot up to 32 million meticais in the first half of this year. The money was used to expel 120 illegal foreigners and the repatriation of over 3,000.
Last year's census of foreign residents showed that there are more than 15,000 foreigners, of 80 different nationalities, living legally in Mozambique. |
