South African President Thabo Mbeki arrived in Zimbabwe Saturday evening for talks with the government and the opposition on a power-sharing deal to end a protracted political stand-off between the two sides.
The South African leader has been mediating in talks between the government and the opposition in Zimbabwe over a possible government of national unity, after two rounds of disputed presidential elections in March and June.
The talks, which began two weeks ago in South Africa, are reported to have produced a tentative agreement which Mbeki was due to finalise with the leaders of the two sides in weekend meetings in Harare, officials said.
President Robert Mugabe's government said Saturday a 'milestone' had been reached in the negotiations, which have been pushed by the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to break the long running political impasse in Zimbabwe.
It did not say what the 'milestone' was, but unofficial reports indicated a power-sharing deal had been reached and was likely to be signed at the weekend.
Mbeki, who is an envoy of both AU and SADC, was expected to hold talks with both the government and the opposition after arrival Saturday.
He is keen to wrap up a deal in Zimbabwe ahead of a SADC summit later this month in South Africa.
To achieve that, Mbeki will stay in Zimbabwe, which he has visited several times in recent weeks, for two days. |
