Githongo was in Kenya for a week-long visit to his homeland -- the first time in three years.
The outspoken anti-corruption crusader, who made his mark as the executive director of the global anti-graft watchdog, Transparency International in Kenya, outsmarted his foes who had planned to sue him to court for defamation Tuesday.
Githongo vowed to press on with his fight against corruption and asserted that he had no time to lose in fighting for the rights and ideals which most Kenyans stood for.
Former Internal Security Minister Chris Murungaru, who was forced to resign after the ex-anti-graft czar exposed his office in an attempted cover-up of the Anglo-leasing finance scandal, had intended to serve Githongo with a court sermon in the defamation case.
Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki was forced to fire Murungaru, his close ally, after he was adversely mentioned in the sale, while two other ministers, Kiraitu Murungi (Justice) and David Mwiraria (Finance) also resigned over the scandal.
The scandal involved payments to non-existent foreign firms in pretence that they had offered services to the government to supply passport printing machinery and a separate police forensic laboratory, all projects valued at US$ 1 billion.
"Radical changes needed to take place in Kenya and I believe passionately that the resilience and the skill of Kenyans will ensure that our country emerged stronger from this (anti-corruption campaign) process. Most critically, we have no time to lose," Githongo said in a statement released from London.
Murungaru had reportedly attempted to serve Githongo with the court sermons when the former anti-graft czar was holding a private meeting with Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka.
Githongo, who received a heroes welcome on his return last week, asked the Kenyan authorities to consider amnesty for looters of public resources on condition that they owned up and agreed to return all property acquired irregularly.
His call attracted muted criticism from newspaper columnists who accused him of playing the mouthpiece for the "hunted" corruption dragons.
Githongo pledged to continue with his corruption crusade, saying: "I have put my self at the disposal of the people. I will promote Kenya and I will continue to c hampion the beliefs and principles that I and Kenyans share." |
