Gambian journalist links attack to work

Mr. Darboe was recently attacked while returning home from work by an armed man, causing serious bodily injuries.

Speaking from an undisclosed location, the journalist said he was faced with "re al threat" prompting him to flee his home.

According to him, after the incident he reported the matter to Gambia Police per sonnel posted at "Wellingara Station".

But, he said, the Police could not do much as they only helped in issuing out a note attesting to the attack to enable him to get medical attention at Faji Kund a Health Centre.

Aside that, Darboe said, the Police were not keen in going after the attacker.

"I am disappointed with the way they treated the matter. The Police were not int erested in my case. They only issued out a note and that was it," he reiterated.

However, Darboe said he was not surprised as Police in the country were always r eluctant to deal with cases of attack against journalists and other media worker s

Meanwhile, he said, it all began with suspicious and strange visits to his house by unidentified individuals.

Darboe further revealed that prior to the attack he was warned on five occasions by the Speaker of Gambian Parliament, Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay who, he said, d i sliked his stories for Freedom newspaper.
